If you check out the "Oi to the World" video (look above) you'll notice that we filmed it in India. Actually we videotaped it. To be really accurate, Sophie Muller came with us when we played some shows in India at the end of our big tour last year, and followed us around with her digital video camera. The song was originally written and performed by an Orange County band called the Vandals, and last year we recorded it for the "A Very Special Christmas" CD. This CD benefits the Special Olympics, and should be in stores now (It's the one with the gold cover.) Anyhow, making the video was fun and playing shows in India was very cool (especially since Tony is of Indian descent).

My latest excuse for why I haven't posted in a while is that the power supply in my computer burned out and I called the fire department because there was so much smoke, and it took weeks to get this thing fixed.
We put up some new photos up in the more photos section, including one of my dog Vinny, who's been inspiring some crazy guitar riffs lately.
We've pretty much finished writing the whole album and it just seems we've done nothing but write songs for the past 11 months. A notable new song is in the key of F# and tentatively titled "Touch and Go". We're still trying to work out producer stuff so we can just go in and finish recording.

The one thing that's always certain in the music business is uncertainty. And just a few days after my last post, its uncertain whether we're going to New York anytime soon or not. So while our creative juices are flowing nicely at the moment, the political juices in our world are not.
Many people ask about Gabe McNair and Steve Bradley, our horn section, so here's a brief update. When Gabe isn't playing keyboards with us in the studio, he's been playing drums for a band called Senza Motiva. Steve is singing in his own band, Good Life up in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our recording of "I Throw My Toys Around" can be heard on the Rugrats movie soundtrack CD, out in stores now. One of our musical heroes, Elvis Costello, wrote and produced the song for us a few months ago.

All of us in No Doubt had a very nice time celebrating Halloween locally at an Orange County party thrown by Offspring singer Dexter Holland. Many of our close friends were in attendance. Fine music was being spun on the patio by Noodles the DJ, causing many of us to dance furiously throughout the night. Eric Sanden from NOFX was there, and so were the Vandals and One Hit Wonder. Gwen was dressed as a Vampire, Tony was a bag of french fries, Adrian was a nun, Gabe was a skeleton, and I was something politically incorrect, so I better not mention it.

Five months into writing their fourth album, No Doubt have completed twenty songs and have a tentative title: Magic's in the Makeup. "That's what I'm leaning toward right now," said singer Gwen Stefani, adding that it's also the title of her favorite new track. Others potentially slotted for the follow-up to the thirteen-million-selling Tragic Kingdom album include Dark Blue, New and I Think I'm Pregnant.

"Only kidding about that last one," Stefani said, noting that she and boyfriend Gavin Rossdale of Bush don't have any foreseeable announcements to make. "There was a song called that but it changed."

Speaking at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards Monday night -- where No Doubt scooped up most-performed-song nods for "Don't Speak" and "Spiderwebs" -- Stefani said her band still has half the writing process ahead of it. "I'm hoping to write another twenty songs," the singer said, and she described the material summoned so far as having "a really cool vibe."

The Anaheim, Calif. quintet has been quietly working in a rented house on Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills. "It's got a beautiful view," said Stefani. "Tony (bassist Kanal) is the only one that's living there, but we come every day and work on songs." The new album is due late this year or early next.

In other No Doubt news, the band will reportedly cover "Hateful" for an upcoming tribute to punk pioneers the Clash, due August 25. In addition, the band's recording of a song called "I Throw My Toys Around," written and produced by Elvis Costello, will appear on the soundtrack to the Rugrats movie, due through Interscope by year's end. And on the Brian Setzer Orchestra's next album, Dirty Boogie, Stefani duets with the former Stray Cat on "You're the Boss," a tune recorded by Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret for Viva Las Vegas but edited out. Look for that one June 30.

SonicNetMod2: When is your new album coming out?

TomDumont: We would like it to come out sometime before the end of the year, but we're in the writing and demoing process now and I haven't even entered the studio to record any songs

yet. But, we're gonna take as long as it takes to make a great record, so if we can't finish it by this year it won't be out till next year.

Sarmicahfan17: Hi Tom, I just wanted to ask how do you feel about No Doubt being nominated for the Grammy's? Excited? Nervous?

TomDumont: Definitely. I think we all feel proud to be nominated, recognized by the music industry. None of us really expect to win and we're looking at it as more of a free trip to NYC to

hang out for a few days and go to parties.

_crystal_rain: What advice would you give to people who want to get into the music biz?

TomDumont: That's a hard question. The number one thing would be to really enjoy the process of playing and making music. As statistically speaking it's really hard to make a living from

music, so really sometimes the only value is in doing it and not necessarily the hopes for fame or fortune.

_crystal_rain: How are you handling the stress that comes with being apart of such a famous group?

TomDumont: The only real stress comes from our relationships within the band and spending the time to make sure those relationships... there's no real pressure from any outside sources.

We really just want to maintain our friendships. Since we've gotten together after a few months off touring it's like old times again and the pressures of being together have all faded.

kalebguest_308d42872: Do you ever get in fights with your band members? Because our band fights all the time

TomDumont: Sometimes we have little arguments and sometimes we have big fights, but that's true of any relationship anybody has whether it be friends or family. At the end of the day

we're all best friends and pretty inseparable.

Zoo_lemonade: What are, as a band, your biggest musical influences?

TomDumont: I'll keep this to the ones we collectively appreciate as a band. I'll start with the Beatles certainly Madness, fishbone, Elvis Costello. Currently, Weezer and Bjork.

Foofighterx : Do you watch the Daily Show?

TomDumont: No. I watch Bob Vila, Hometime.

Kenny1683: What kind of traits do you look for in a girl?

Nikki_Rae_98: How long did it take you guys to get this far?

TomDumont: We started in 1987, so 11 years.

BLuE_aSpHaLt: Do you guys like Save Ferris?

TomDumont: I think that Monique has a good voice and I think they're a good band. And they're nice people as far as I know. I used to promote a club in Anaheim years ago and Monique?s

old band used to come into my club, so I knew her in those days and she was always very nice.

FrogStarEyes: Do you ever perform songs from you first two albums? I know you do "Move On" but any others?

TomDumont: Yes, usually one or two songs from each album every show. We'd like to do more but the vast majority of fans don't know those songs and it kinda bums them out.

Gothichore00: What do you think of Marilyn Manson?

TomDumont: I grew up as a very young kid loving KISS so naturally I would appreciate Marilyn Manson.

FrogStarEyes: If you weren't a musician what else do you think you would have as a career?

TomDumont: Maybe a construction worker or a carpenter.

SeetherStar: What do you hope to be doing in 10 years form now?

TomDumont: When I'm forty years old, I have no idea.

Orange_Freeway: Have you thought of a name for ND's new CD?

TomDumont: I think of names for our next CD all the time and I'm gonna make a huge list and present them to the band. But there hasn't been any working title at all yet

ZeroSlunk: What equipment do you use?

TomDumont: As far as guitars go, I play guitars made by Hamer. They're hand made in CT and they're very nice quality guitars. I like any kind of tube amps from the 60?s. Most notably

Silvertone amps and Fender amps.

JoNaThEnDaViS : Do you like South Park?

TomDumont: Yes. We watch it and we're big Mr. Hankie fans. They've actually asked us to write a song and be on a future episode and I'm not sure yet if we're going to be able to but we're

certainly going to be able to try.

SonicNetGuest: The lyrics to the climb were written by Eric Stefani, Gwen's brother, and I think it could be about us and stardom, but it could be about anything in life in a very general

sense.

chanceXguest_3cbc766: Is your label Sea Creature Records going to be signing groups, or is it just for distribution and such for the band?

TomDumont: Sea Creature Records is our "vanity label" and we're going to try to sign bands, but so far we've been so busy writing our own songs we haven't found any bands to sign. I

should tell people to send demos. If you want to send a demo you can send it to our PO Box that's on our CD credits.

Keefer_37: Is there anything new you've been experimenting with musically?

TomDumont: We've tried to use drum loops and computer technology to write songs, but it turns out it's a lot easier to just play them and record them as a band using real instruments. So I

guess that was a failed attempt.

SeetherStar: Who do you get along with the best from the band?

TomDumont: I live down the street from Adrian, so I guess we're pretty regular buddies. But I'm also really close with Tony and Gwen as well. It's really hard to pick your friends and

prioritize them, but I guess me and Adrian hang out more than anyone else.

AyeDavanita_PJ: Who would you like to tour with?

TomDumont: I feel like we've pretty much played shows with everyone we've ever wanted to. There is a chance that we're going to play a show in Hawaii with Madness in the beginning of

May that's in the works.

AyeDavanita_PJ: Tom what song would you like to remake?

TomDumont: When I'm driving in the car listening to my radio, I always think of songs that I want to remake. We've talked about "Almost Blue" by Elvis Costello but haven't gotten around to

it yet.

BLuE_aSpHaLt: How do you guys feel about Gwen always in the spotlight?

TomDumont: We're fine about it. That question came up to us a lot in the past year. I think because of the "Don't Speak" video which portrayed the three guys in the band having a

problem with Gwen's fame, but that video was a pseudo fictional creation and I honestly wouldn't change that if I could go back and change it.

SeetherStar: ND has dealt with a suicide, and I 'm sure it was very tough. Do you have any advice for someone who's thinking about it?

TomDumont: Anyone who's thinking about suicide should certainly seek some kind of solace when they can, and if no ones available try to find a psychiatrist who can help them.

Kat178: how did each of you come to join the band?

TomDumont: That's a bunch of really long stories and maybe you could check out bio?s from our website to read more about that because it would take over an hour to tell those stories.

No_Doubt30: When exactly is your 4th album coming out and what kind of material is gonna be on it??

TomDumont: We've only just started working on songs for the next album and it's hard to describe the direction we're heading in, but I will say that it will definitely not be a projection from

where Tragic Kingdom left off. You won't see us going back and trying to compete with all the new SKA bands out there.

twocanguest_3aa040963: Where does most of the inspiration for the songs come from?

TomDumont: Lyrically speaking I would guess that Gwen's inspiration comes from experiences and events in her life. Musically speaking, we're inspired a lot by new wave groups from the

80?s.

Nodoubters : Hi Tom, we are from the Brazilian fan club ,we are waiting you here, we love you, and we wanna ask you if you have a favorite nominate on Grammy awards?

TomDumont: Well, I should say hi to Brazil. We had great shows there last year as far as excited about Grammy nominees, not to be negative but I'm not that excited about anybody, but

then again I'm not sure who's nominated for what. So I'll have to wait till Wednesday night to find out who excites me.

Funkadylicsk8er: Did you play in any other bands before No Doubt?

TomDumont: Yes, in the mid 80?s I played in a heavy metal group with my older sister modeled after Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

SonicNetMod2: Were you surprised to find out Rob Halford was gay?

TomDumont: Me and all my friends, heavy metal fans, suspected it for years, and I'm happy he finally came out of the closet. In some ways it kind of breaks down the barriers of the macho

heavy metal world.

StoneCold50: What do you do for fun? When your not working?

TomDumont: I like to hot rod, muscle cars, automobiles made in the 60?s. I watch all those home improvement shows on Saturday afternoon and I have a puppy dog that's biting me right

now, a Jack Russell terrier. He's the cutest freaking dog ever.

Ltlmnstr: Tom, How does it feel to be in the most popular band of 1997?

TomDumont: It feels good. In my day to day life I don't feel as popular as we must be. As an aside, I'm reading peoples comments as I'm doing this and I find them very entertaining.

Aleashie: What?s your favorite album?

TomDumont: That's impossible to answer. Too many favorites. I'll name my three favorites of 97, and I'm not 100% sure they were released in 97. Pinkerton by Weezer, Fashion Nugget by

Cake and the Sublime record.

Amanda14198: What was your favorite song from your album?

TomDumont: "End It on This."

SonicNetHost: Are there going to be any songs on the new album about or dedicated to Brad Nowell?

TomDumont: I don't know yet. Maybe we'll dedicate the songs to Bud and Eric who are the surviving members of Sublime.

Maynard_1 : Tom, are you still doing your article for the Guitar magazine?

TomDumont: No that was a limited job that only lasted for three or four issues.

Dusty_3: TOM HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN PEOPLE SAY YOU SOLD OUT HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THAT?

TomDumont: We in No Doubt have always listened to the radio and watched MTV, and always wished we could be on the radio and MTV. We're happy we achieved that and I believe that

the concept of selling out is the concept of a pre-teenager.

Greemsal: Do you guys miss playing with Sublime?

TomDumont: Yes.

SonicNetHost: Are Gabe and Steve in No Doubt for the long run?

TomDumont: We hope so, they're off doing their own thing right now. But we'll do everything we can to make sure they're out touring with us and playing on our records. They're the best

horn section we've ever had.

_DKNY_girl: How does it feel to have to meet with certain expectations on your talent?

TomDumont: The only expectations I have to meet are my own, and the others in the band and those are pretty easy.

Keefer_37: Are there any producers you'd really like to work with?

TomDumont: We keep trying to get Elvis Costello to produce our record and they keep saying he doesn't produce records anymore

SlimGym: Tom what do you recommend to a fellow guitarist, when looking for a singer?

TomDumont: You should look for someone who sings good. That's smart ass, but it's true.

SonicNetHost: What smaller bands would you like to open up for you on your next tour?

TomDumont: Tough one. I haven't listened to the radio enough to know what all the new bands are doing out there, so I apologize. How 'bout Prodigy, that would be fun, they're probably

bigger than us, well technically speaking we might be bigger... but that could be all sweaty and grimy and don't shower and with all different girls...

Vwxs: How long did it take to make Tragic Kingdom?

TomDumont: On and off it took three years, but we were only in the studio a week or two here or there, between our jobs and going to Cal State Fullerton.

SpiralBeck : So, where you a part of the band when Eric Stefani was still involved or had he already left to pursue his career as a cartoonist?

TomDumont: I was in the band for 9 years with Eric.

HYDRA_6: Do you enjoy your fame?

TomDumont: Yeah, there are a lot of great fringe benefits that come from being in a rock band for example, a free trip to NY this week for the Grammy?s. We get taken to dinner at really

expensive restaurants by music industry moguls. And then also we get to travel around the world for free and go to places we never would have been able to afford to go to if we weren't

famous.

Theo_78: Some people say your band turned from Ska to pop. Is that true?

TomDumont: Yes. However, that happened back in 1993 before anyone in the world gave a shit about us. We did not do that to sell more records.

SonicNetMod2: I saw you guys at the Berkley Square do you miss that?

TomDumont: Yes, those shows we played at Berkeley Square were among the sweatiest rock concerts on record. I do remember that one show where I got spit on a lot. This one guy kept

spitting on me. And since he couldn't move in the pit I spit this lougi on him.

Mr. Larsen: What is your favorite city to play in Europe?

TomDumont: Without any question, Barcelona, Spain.

SonicNetMod2: Who is your favorite Spice Girl?

TomDumont: I like Sporty Spice. Actually, I have a story about me and the Spice Girls.

TomDumont: I was on the rooftop pool of the four seasons hotel in Singapore when we played there, and I was reading a book and nobody else was up on the pool deck. And all of a

sudden the Spice Girls came up with some guys from MTV and a camera and they did some kind of MTV promo and they all checked me out with my shirt off and they were all too nervous

to come up and talk to me. No one even came up to talk to me and I was the only guy up there. Sporty Spice looked really good, so did Scary Spice. She seems really intelligent. Pretty

bright. And after they left, I had these fantasies where they'd all come to my room.

Hedvig77: What did you think of playing with Stephen Perkins? Do you like Jane?s Addiction?

TomDumont: Yes. Jane?s Addiction were a big group in LA during our formative years and we got Steven Perkins to play drums, steel drums on "Spiderwebs." He was a super nice guy.

Really musically inclined and really cares about music and doesn't seem to into making the scene, so to speak didn't seem like a hot shot.

LatinLoverboy25: HOW did No Doubt maintain a positive outlook for so many years before striking gold?

TomDumont: We had a great following in Southern California starting in 1987, for all those years and we always had great shows to play thanks to our fans in this area. So we always felt

really successful when we started making records.

Mattyp_98: How long have you been playing guitar, and are you self taught?

TomDumont: Mostly self taught and I've been playing for 18 years. I started when I was 12.

Darkling_stalker: Should we nuke Iraq?

TomDumont: No. I'm pretty certain there's a bunch of nice normal people who live in Iraq that shouldn't be nuked.

Kat178: Do you ever go in the No Doubt chat room on the official page?

TomDumont: No I never have, but it's because my AOL browser never supported it.. Now that I have Netscape maybe I'll start.

SonicNetHost: What were some some that you guys opened up for when you were smaller?

TomDumont: Believe it or not, we opened for Bad Religion and the Untouchables and Fishbone and Jellyfish and Ziggy Marley those were all pretty exciting for us before we were signed.

Hyper_0: Will you only play at large venues in the future?

TomDumont: No. There's a pretty good chance that we won't be able to play at big ventures in the future so we'll play smaller ones. We'll probably play some clubs out in Orange County

while we're home.

No Doubt will treat fans to two new releases this holiday season, but only one of them is actually new.

The new stuff that No Doubt followers will be anxiously awaiting comes in the form of a 90 minute home video called "Live in the Tragic Kingdom," which captures the band in action at a pair of Anaheim homecoming shows last spring. That video should hit stores on November 11.

Die hard No Doubt aficionados may already have the band's other holiday offering, the 1995 independently released "Beacon Street Collection." That album will be reissued on October 21, and features tracks the band recorded at its home studio over a single weekend.

By contrast, it took two years of on and off recording for No Doubt to make its breakthrough album "Tragic Kingdom."

According to bassist Tony Kanal, the group's steady diet of touring kept them going during that period.

"When you go through so many ups many ups and downs, you get a grasp of how the music industry is," Kanal said. "We've learned that you have to just focus in things you can control as a band. That's music and live shows, and that's what we focus on, and that's what we're going to focus on this year, is touring and playing live shows for people because there's so many other things, facets to being in a band that you can't control."

No Doubt will continue to focus on its tour in Europe, Asia and South America through mid-November, and will start work on its next album in the spring.

NO DOUBT MAKES ITSELF AT HOME

Band makes history as the first local act to perform as headliners at a major county venue.

Anaheim - It may have been the giddiest night of hometown rocking ever presided over by a band from Orange County.

Then again, every night is pretty giddy when No Doubt plays.

Saturday's show at the Pond of Anaheim was also historic. Before a sold-out house of more than 12,000 predominantly teenage and preteen fans, most of whom jumped as if they were on pogo sticks and screamed at a pitch reminiscent of a long ago Beatles concert, No Doubt completed a circle that no other Orange County rock band has navigated.

Members Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont had risen from a garage practice room a short jog from Disneyland to headlining status at their hometown arena - a two night engagement, at that. No other Orange County band had headlined a show at the Pond before, or at the county's other major pop venues, Irvine Meadows and the now abandoned Pacific Amphitheatre. (No Doubt played the Pond in March 1996, but that was a warmup to headliner Bush.)

With its catchy songs, springy rhythms and a stage show full of infectious, nonstop energy, No Doubt has become a phenomenon to the tune of 10 million world-wide sales (6.5 million in the U.S., according to SoundScan) for its career-making 1995 release, "Tragic Kingdom." But the band members, who are in their late 20s and went through 10 years of struggle before stardom struck, have always been a levelheaded bunch. Rather than engage in special preening for a special occasion, No Doubt put on its usual show, with ringleader Stefani making frequent references to being back home, but never gloating about the milestone at hand.

The only marked change from No Doubt's last O.C. concert - on Halloween night 1996 at the 5,000 capacity Bren Events Center - was the fancy stage set, with its haunted-forest motif and elaborate lighting design. Also new was the wild-woman Amazon tangle of Stefani's coiffure, a departure from her ponytailed just-a-girl and wavy glamour-doll phases. As usual, she raced and strutted about the stage with astonishing stamina, comporting herself as a cross between a wide-eyed, innocent Dorothy in Oz and a confidently sassy, occasionally cussing counselor at summer camp.

During one pause, Stefani neatly encapsulated the incongruity of returning home a rock star.

"The weird part," she said from the stage, "is staying in the hotel down the street in your own town."

Hotel living will be No Doubt's lot through July, when the band is scheduled to complete what has stretched into a two-year cycle of touring to promote "Tragic Kingdom."

Though its approach is friendly and lighthearted, No Doubt is hardly a kiddie-pop a la New Kids on the Block. Still, it would be hard to find another band initially launched on modern-rock radio that has such a large draw of preteen fans.

"I like Gwen's attitude. I like her personality," said 11-year-old Ariana Tosatto of Sherman Oaks. Her tiny friend, Laura Corby, 10, was awaiting her first-ever rock concert. She sported an excited gleam in her eyes, a blond ponytail a la Gwen, a No Doubt shirt several sizes to large for her and heavy boots and black fishnet stockings like she had seen Stefani wear in photos.

Arian said her opportunities to dress up like Gwen tend to be "very rare" because of strict orders from her mom - the girls' chaperon for the evening. But it wasn't hard to spot others of the sort Stefani has jokingly dubbed "Gwen girls," with crop tops, striped track-and-field warmup slacks and bared belly buttons the key to the look.

Carolyn Moustaks of Anaheim Hills said that bringing her 11-year-old son, Shane, to the show was mandatory: "He's in love with her." They were standing about 40 feet from the stage, with show time approaching, so there was no need to ask who "her" might be,

Shane insisted that his was no schoolboy crush, no mere puppy love, but a deeper admiration born of sincere aesthetic regard. "I think she's pretty, but I just like her music. She's a good singer."

While the kids were numerous, veteran No Doubt fans were not hard to find.

"We're from Anaheim, the home city of [expletive] Gwen, dude, and No Doubt," crowed Kresta Klohr, who stood in the Pond's parking lot with about 10 other fans in their early 20s. Most of them had arrived in a battered 1965 Volkswagen van with windows bearing the soap-script announcement: "Orange County Loves No Doubt." Klohr and her friend, Jennifer Canaday, both have followed No Doubt for five years; Canaday said she first saw No Doubt at Caffe Nove, a dinky venue in Anaheim.

Not all parents had kids in tow. Dennis and Dovelynn Brinton - 40 and 37, respectively - had left their three No Doubt-loving daughters at home in Rancho Santa Margarita.

"This is our night out," said Dennis, an engineer who likes to keep up with new music and flagged No Doubt as a favorite several years ago. Ths couple had no qualms about having paid a broker $150 per ticket for seats with a face price of $20. "I like the whole band's motivation, the energy the band puts out," Dennis Brinton said. "[My wife] is more into the mellow love thing [of No Doubt's big hit ballad "Don't Speak."] That's why we mesh so well."

As No Doubt played "Don't Speak," one of Anaheim's most talented rockers, Robert "Big Sandy" Williams - veteran leader of the acclaimed, widely traveled rockabilly and western swing band, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys - stood near the soundboard on the Pond's floor. Williams makes his living playing on a commercially modest roots-rock circuit that makes him a very long shot for arena-rocker status. He said he knew little about No Doubt's music, nor did he know the band's members. But with a free pass from a friend available, he made a point of catching the show.

"The way they shot up [to success] is amazing. It's kind of an event," he said. "You just can't help but put yourself in their position and wonder what it must be like. I feel proud for them, a hometown band."

The hulking, soft-spoken Williams said he was introduced to Stefani before the show.

"I couldn't help feel nervous. I felt like everybody else; 'Oh my God, she said "Hi" to me!'"

"Don't Speak" ended, and Williams took in the crowd's roar.

"If you're a musician, this is what you dream for," he said. "If you say anything else, you're lying. To play in front of your hometown audience, and have them know every song."

Don't let the name of the band fool you - lead vocalist Gwen Stefani of No Doubt had plenty of doubts over the years regarding her band. The group formed nine years ago in its hometown of Orange County, Calif. Until last year, the group played in the shadows of Disneyland.The group caught the ear of Interscope Records during the spring of '91. No Doubt released two albums, which stiffed. During the spring of '95 the band recorded its third album, "Tragic Kingdom", which hit the bins last autumn.The perky single "Just A Girl" was picked up by influential Los Angeles radio station KROQ during the winter. It didn't take long for the video to be added to MTV. By March, the tune was ubiquitous throughout the states."It's weird, isn't it," Stefani asked while calling from a cellular phone on the band's tour bus. "For years I never really thought we would get anywhere, but now we've finally gotten somewhere. It's an unreal feeling. This validates nine years of hard work."The quirky, satirical "Just A Girl" put the band on the map, and the second single from "Tragic Kingdom", "Spiderwebs", has increased the band's fan base. The tune, a lush ska rocker, has become one of the biggest alternative hits of the summer. The tune is reminiscent of early No Doubt."The reason we all started this thing was due to our love of ska," Stefani said. "That music spoke to me. Even though my brother and I couldn't play any instruments, we thought we might be able to form a ska band."Stefani's brother Eric, a pianist, guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young formed No Doubt. Just after the release of "Tragic Kingdom", Eric Stefani left the band to work as an animator for "The Simpsons"."Eric never liked touring, and he's happy what he's doing with 'The Simpsons'," Stefani said. "So everybody's happy. I love being out on stage".No Doubt has had a lot of practice performing under the lights. The group has been on tour non-stop for nine months."It gets a little difficult after all this time," Stefani said. "I'm bummed out a bit. I can do without the interviews and all the distractions on top of running around a stage all night. I'm at the point where I'm pretty drained. It's not healthy running on empty, but we got the shows to do and I have no choice but to perform. It could be worse - nobody could be asking for me to perform."No Doubt plays a sold-out Trocadero tomorrow, which is a far cry from the band's last local appearance. Last November, the band played the Middle East in front of a throng of 20."That was a terrible time and performance," Stefani said. "There was no energy, and we just didn't perform well under the circumstances. The funny thing is, some friends (Dance Hall Crashers) were playing the Trocadero and invited us to come by and we did, before our show. We really loved it. We said this would be a cool place to play, and now we're going to be there. It's funny how life works out."

Like many guitarists who first answered the call in the early Eighties, No Doubt's Tom Dumont, 28, was initially drawn to the musician's life by the made-for-adolescence battle cry of heavy metal."Ever since I got my first Kiss record, I wanted to be a guy in a rock band," Dumont recalls. "But the heavy metal scene was so terrible in Orange County, California. It was really competitive, and the music wasn't what was important. Joining No Doubt, a ska band, was a big change, but it was immediately way more fun - the music was a whole new world to me.On Tragic Kingdom (Trauma/Interscope), No Doubt's third album, ska is but one world in a vast musical universe. Punk, reggae, new wave, country, pop, blues and disco (with, of course, a few flakes of metal) are all explored with equal vigor and aplomb.According to Dumont, his knack for style-surfing belies a less-than-diligent practice ethic. "I'm a very lazy player as far as that stuff goes - I'll kind of listen to stuff and think about it, but I'll never take the time to figure it out," says the guitarist. "I mean, I played the flamenco-style solo on 'Don't Speak' with a pick, which just completely ignores the number one rule of that style of guitar playing!"With the recent departure of No Doubt founding keyboardist/songwriter Eric Stefani (brother of the band's vocalist, Gwen), Dumont has stepped up to assume a bigger share of the songwriting chores. In fact, he penned the music to "Just A Girl," Tragic Kingdom's decidedly Eighties-flavored breakthrough single. "I consciously wanted to make a weird, jerky riff that sounded Devo- or B-52's-like," he says. "The single surprised the hell out of me. I mean, I always thought the song was cool, but I never expected it to fly like it has."

Cameras, lights, backdrops and props are ready. Industry types have assumed their positions. The air is thick with anticipation as we wait for the stars of today's photo shoot - Orange County rock band No Doubt - to emerge from their secluded dressing room.First to appear is charming drummer Adrian Young. He's clearly at odds with the loud, colorful ensemble chosen for him. "I feel like I'm wearing some kind of zany Mervyn's clothing. It's like 'Hey there! Let's go party!'" he jokes, winking and making cheese-guns with his hands. He is soon joined by bassist Tony Kanal and guitarist Tom Dumont, both equally uncomfortable in their respective get-ups. The room begins to buzz with whispers, mumblings and grumblings.Then singer Gwen Stefani arrives. All eyes skate across her unbelievable frame, the sculpted platinum hair and the cherry red lips that twist and glide into an alluring down-turned smile. Stefani is a star- the kind that turns heads and stops conversations. She enjoys the dress-up, the play-acting. She loves the camera and it's a love that is fully reciprocated. Today she is wearing a minuscule white t-shirt paired with equally form-fitting orange leather pants, the excess of fabric being held together by a clamp in the back."Jesus, Gwen, you look like a twig!" Young tells her.Stefani mulls over this accusation. "That's good. I mean, that's good, right?" she says finally,Stefani is a girl and she's not about to apologize for it. And before you start judging, realize that with one little unassuming song, she's done more for women's causes than you ever will."Just a Girl", from No Doubt's third album, Tragic Kingdom, is a catchy new-wave flavored song that proclaims the burdens of the fairer sex, using the stereotype to point out its own flaws: "Cause I'm just a girl, little ol' me/ Don't let me out of your sight/ I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite/ So don't let me have any rights/ Oh... I've had it up to here!" The song which by now you've definitely heard on the radio and which was never meant to be more than a reflection of Stefani's own frustrating experiences (such as her father's concern over her driving to ex-boyfriend Kanal's house late at night), rises to anthem-like proportions when performed live. Stefani, all pouts, poses, and kicks, leads the audience in a celebration of girl-hood, and if only for a little while, the typical foundation on which rock music stands begins to crumble.So who is the real Stefani? Is she the creation strutting about on-stage speaking in the little girl voice and basking in the sensation of thousands of eyes washing over her lithe frame? Or is she the earnest, soft spoken family girl who, according to her younger sister Jill, "was always giving really good advice about guys and about friends and about the superficiality of it all"?"I think I've been able to fool a lot of people because I know I'm a dork. I'm a geek," says Stefani, giving hope to geeks nationwide."I think [the on-stage persona] is definitely a part of me, but I don't think that I go around when I'm offstage saying 'Fuck you, I'm a girl' and running all over the place. It's definitely two sides of my personality."One wonders how Stefani manages to keep her energy at such a feverish pitch, night after night."Yesterday I looked in the mirror and I thought, 'God, I look so old today. I look so tired.' So I just put on tons of make-up and screamed up and down the hall to try to get myself worked up and then I went out there and the audience was so intense there's just no way you couldn't feed off that. These kids were just on fire. They looked like a bunch of Rice Krispies!"No Doubt formed nine years ago in Anaheim, California, at the suggestion of high school friend John Spence, a charismatic kid who was in love with the idea of being in a band and whose subsequent suicide forced No Doubt to learn to overcome hardship. The initial line-up included Stefani's older brother Eric on keyboards (who was to remain in the band as keyboard player and main songwriter until '95 when he left to pursue a career as an artist), and Gwen and Spence sharing vocals."I never really thought about being in a band. I mean, maybe when I watched Donny and Marie I thought, 'God, I wish I could be Marie,' but that was the closest I'd come. John was the one that said 'I want to be the singer of a band.' That was his dream," remembers Stefani, whose personal heroes include Angelo Moore of Fishbone and Kermit the Frog."When your friend dies like that and it's so unexpected it's very traumatic. I think it taught us all a big lesson in how much one person can influence so many different people."The early music of No Doubt was "ska, because that's what we were into and that's the only thing we really knew. It was pretty easy music to play." But as the line-up began to solidify, with "Prince fan" Kanal joining almost immediately, followed by heavy metal guitarist Dumont in '88 and drummer Young in '89, the wide range of styles encompassed by No Doubt began to emerge, as documented by their releases.No Doubt released their self-titled debut on Interscope in 1992, an independently produced collector's item called The Beacon Street Collection in 1995, and Tragic Kingdom on Trauma/Interscope in 1996."We were labeled a ska band forever and it was always something we were trying to get away from. We wanted to become our own sound. For the first time on this record I think we were able to do that ?p;?p; to mix up all the different influences without freaking people out."Stefani need not have worried. America has latched on to No Doubt's brand of vibrant, tuneful rock, with Stefani's smoothly intriguing show-tune vocals dancing in and out of a catchy stew of varied bass lines and guitar riffs. No Doubt is easily the band of the moment, and this fact is not lost on its members."We're just so happy that people even want to take notice of us after all these years," says Kanal. "We went to New York to do MTV and we were there on the set and Gwen and I just looked at each other and said, 'I can't believe we're doing this right now. I can't believe we're here.' It's really incredible."And then there's the flip side: "It's weird. [We're playing for] a lot of new people that aren't used to coming to [our] shows. It's a different vibe. It's not as fun as it used to be," says Dumont, who promoted a well respected club for a short while and is known by Orange County musicians as a strong supporter of the eclectic local scene. "I don't know, it just seems like [these new people] don't know what to do, they don't get it."The "it" to which Dumont refers is No Doubt's roots as an underground band, a grounding all members want to maintain. "It's like we come from a scene, a local Southern California scene where we play all-ages shows and they're kind of punk and ska audiences. You know people go to the shows and just go nuts and have fun and dance and crowd surf and it's a very physical, energetic kind of show," explains Dumont.But despite the gripes, "This is something I've wanted for so many years now and I never really thought it would happen. It's like a dream come true to hear my songs on the radio. I know that the music industry and people that listen to music these days are pretty fickle and this may be our one hit wonder and it may be gone tomorrow, but we're going to have a lot of fun in the meantime. 99% of musicians, whether they are telling the truth or not, want to make a living playing music. It's not about selling out. It's about having a little fun for awhile and not having to work another job and getting to play music all day long, every day. It's really satisfying."This spectrum seems little more than the varied emotions of a band in flux, making the transition from local underground heroes to national entertainers. All the members are thrilled to be receiving attention, yet they talk as if it might evaporate tomorrow. They all remain loyal to the local scene which housed them for so many years. And they all attempt to make sense of the incongruous blending of art and commerce, worrying about being perceived as "sell-outs."Kanal admits concern over how fans would react to their decision to tour in a tour bus, as opposed to the vans they always used in the past, despite inconvenience and issues of safety. He's well aware of the distorting powers of fame."I think for the most part we're pretty nice people. I check myself every day just to make sure this is the same person. I really want people to tell me if they think anything has changed about me. I think about that stuff all the time," says Kanal, who is a few credits short of receiving a degree in psychology.Dumont harbors the same concerns. "I haven't been able to hang out with my friends much anymore because I'm so busy. I wonder if they are like, 'Tom's too cool for us now.' They don't understand that there's a lot of responsibilities and we're busy constantly, all day long."Stefani talks of the girls who approached her at a recent show, feeling betrayed, and worrying that now "jocks and nerds" would be audience members. "I totally understand that, because I had a band that was 'my band' ? Madness - and in some ways I wanted to wear the shirt and tell everyone that they were my band but I didn't want other people to really get into them, so I can understand that. But at the same time I think a lot of people are really happy for us."The genuine excitement the group feels is more poignant when coming on the heals of No Doubt's "Bleak Period", referred to by all members in grand, sweeping, epic terms."If you would have seen us last year," Stefani begins, "we were barely hanging on by a thread. We were ready to quit and save ourselves from becoming a bunch of losers."These hard times centered around, according to Stefani, "political stuff with our label. The biggest problem was we weren't able to put out music and it was like three years between records. I remember the first year the band came together it seemed like so much had gotten done and the last three years it was like nothing happened. That's why we put out The Beacon Street Collection, which is the CD we did in our garage. It was one of the best things we ever did because we were able to take some songs that would have probably gotten lost and document them. But this was awesome because at the very end, when we were mixing our album, we hooked up with these guys from Trauma, which happens to be a subsidiary of Interscope, so now it's kind of neat because we have Interscope and Trauma working for us. Everything has turned around. It's flip-flopped. It's unbelievable how fast it has changed, so we're just trying to take every day and just enjoy it because we know it could be gone at any second."But in the process, No Doubt lost a member?p;?p; keyboard player Eric Stefani. "Eric was my biggest musical influence," says Gwen. "He's the one that said 'you be the singer' when I was sitting on the couch watching the Brady Bunch and being as lazy as possible. So if it wasn't for him, I don't know what I would be doing. It was really hard when he left because I felt like this was his baby ? his band. For me to take over was really weird and awkward, but at the same time it was a long time coming. He taught us how to write songs and we took it from there. In a lot of ways this record has so much more meaning to me than the first one because I was really able to participate, whereas on the first record I was singing songs about my brother getting his wisdom teeth pulled."There are many connections between this latest record and the "Bleak Period". The album's title is a pun on Anaheim's own Disneyland (referred to as the "Magic Kingdom"), but the album is mostly about the anything-but-magical hardships faced by No Doubt. The break-up of Kanal and Stefani's seven year relationship inspired many of the songs."You can imagine all the things that come with being in a band with your ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend. It's odd. We just deal with it every day," Kanal reveals. "We're still really good friends. We were best friends when we were going out and Gwen is really, really important to me."Stefani holds similar feelings. "I think we've just been really blessed that we can remain good friends. I love him so much.""I've always thought of myself as being a really normal person, with the most normal life, with a mom and dad and sisters and brothers and a totally normal personality with nothing exciting about it and then I step back and look at my situation and all the, like," Stefani pauses, measuring her words. "How can I say shit that's going on and I realize I am in the weirdest incestuous situation. It's a weird life that I have been thrown into, but at the same time I can't remember a time that I've been happier. Things are so great right now and I'm really enjoying my life, every second of it."The music business is a weird industry. The methods of achieving success are outwardly shunned and denounced, though secretly sought after. No Doubt are achieving the kind of success every other band, whether they would admit to it or not, secretly hope for. After nine years ripe with the good and the bad, No Doubt refuse to play the game. "It's funny, because at least now we're not like total losers," says Stefani. "We had a video on MTV and got to be on the radio and stuff. If it was taken away tomorrow, we at least got to do that. Now we have stuff to show our grandkids."

Even as it makes a splash in the Home Pond, the Anaheim band knows how to take naught for granted.The road to recognition was a rough one. Since their first concert - nine years ago this week - the members of No Doubt have been nostrangers to frustration and loss, including a singer's suicide. Even now, when their lastest album has made it to the Top 40 and their "Just A Girl" video is all over MTV, critics are divided as to their musical significanceBut this week, No Doubt came home to Anaheim as the opening act on the hottest alternative rock bill of the season, another signal of the quartet's increasing national appeal.Joining Bush and the Goo Goo Dolls for a sold-out performance at the Pond on Tuesday, No Doubt became the first band from Orange COunty ever to play the arena.Singer Gwen Stefani, whose family has lived in Anaheim for three generations, remembers that whenever she and her bandmates would drive by the Pond, they'd joke that someday thay's play there - albeit as headliners. Now, with album sales topping 200,000 and mounting at a pace of 25,000 a week, major success is a real possibility. But No Doubt's members are neither giddy with anticipation nor frazzled with fear of a costly misstep.At ages 25 to 28, they have been through too much together to get giddy or frazzled. "We're prepared for what's happening," Tony Kanal said as he sat on a drab grat carpet outside the band's dressing room, putting a fresh set of strings on the Yamaha bass he has played since he was in the jazz band at Anaheim High."It's not 'We're an awesome band,'" he continued, in a voice that was quiet but firm. "The bottom line is, we're just very fortunate. We know how fickle the music industry is and that you have to focus on the things you can control - writing songs and playing music."If No Doubt was prone to frazzling, Tuesday would have been a likely day for it - a day the band's publicist had dubbed "the longest on Earth," chocked with interviews, photo sessions, meetings with agents and managers and lot of rock 'n' roll diplomacy involving hobnobbing with fans and well-sihers and a group of record company factotums responsible for promoting the band's album when it comes out overseas.All of this would keep Stefani, Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young shuttling back and forth through the stark, concrete innards of the Pond for more than 12 hours, with just a 35-minute respite for actual performing.The day started badly. Most of the band rolled into the Pond's Star Dressing Room D half an hour late for a photo session with teen magazine Sassy. Then Stefani, her flowing blond hair still in curlers and kerchief, realized she had left her makeup bag at home.By the time she had retrieved it and dressed, she looked wonderfully camera- ready in her bangs, halter top and snug turquoise sequined pants, like a cross between Jessica Lange and a naughty cheerleader. But No Doubt was 90 minutes behind schedule.Rushing to the photo shoot, Stefani said her "nervous energy" was running high and she reminded herself to put it to good use. Later, during one of her few unscheduled moments, she said she makes a conscious effort to remember that this is a special time for No Doubt, that it's important to mentally register all that is happening and to embrace it."I really try to enjoy every second and be really aware. I don't take it for granted when somebody says, 'Can I have your autograph?' I give it with joy."No Doubt knows the value of appreciating the good times because it has seen so many hard ones. The band was founded on its members' shared enthusiasm for a lively, quick-stepping Jamaican pop style called ska. Originally, Stefani, still a high school senior, shared the spotlight with John Spence, a wild, kinetic screamer who literally did back flips to stir the stage-front most pit frenzy.Just before Christmas 1987, Spence committed suicide. Shocked and disheartened, the band decided to continue. Stefani wasn't yet confident that she could rouse the crowds on her own, but by 1989 No Doubt had arrived at approximately its present form - Stefani out front alone, beguiling audiences with her theatrics, while new additions Young and Dumont helped expand the band's sound, which is augmented in concert by two horn players. Jamaican rhythms remain in the mix, but they are part of complex weave that also incorporates funk, punk rock, heavy metal and melodic New Wave pop.From the start, No Doubt had a reputation not only for lively shows but for vigorous, focused efforts to promote itself with leaflets, posters and T- shirts with imaginatively drawn logos."It's a good sign to see bands put their egos aside for the bigger goal," says Moss Jacobs, a veteran Los Angeles concert promoter who has worked often with No Doubt and was one of their pre-concert well-wishers at the Pond. "Some bands would never be caught dead putting out their own fliers."By 1991, No Doubt's hard work and continuing musical development had paid off in a record deal with Interscope, a label on its way to becoming one of the great success stories of the decade.The only problem was that No Doubt was not part of that success. Its debut album, released in February 1992, received scant promotion. Sales were meager. As work began on a second album, No Doubt's frustration deepened. The band was busy churning out songs that Interscope was just as busy rejecting.Worried that its fans would grow tired of waiting, No Doubt took an unusual step: issuing a CD on its own for the local market. "The Beacon Street Collection" came out last spring with tracks Interscope rejected but that the band felt deserved a shot.The wait for an official album with promotional muscle behind it wore especially on Eric Stefani, Gwen's keyboard-playing older brother, whom the band had regarded as its main creative engine.He quit in December 1994 to concentrate on his other passion, animation (he now works full time as the layout artist for "The Simpsons".) Eric and Gwen both say his departure - which saddened her deeply - had a positive side, giving her and the other band members room to develop as songwriters.Gwen Stefani turned another important change, her breakup with Kanal after a seven-year romance, into material for lyrics. The two, who always tried to keep their relationship from affecting the band, continue to get on amicably in what Dumont calls "a real social challenge... Ninety percent of the time they're really good about it."By mid-'95, No Doubt, feeling like the Cinderella of Interscope, had found a fairy godmother in Trauma Records, a small Interscope affiliate whose owners loved No Doubt's material and took over promoting the band. No Doubt began touring more than a month before the release in October of its breakthrough album, "Tragic Kingdom" (the title and cover art, featuring rotted oranges, are the band's wry commentary on the souring of its home county's suburban dream).Radio play spread; MTV kicked in, and now there is no end in sight to a road that will take the band to Europe in June. No Doubt's biggest concern now, Kanal said, is to get out of the huge arenas it will play with label-mated Bush through early May - a tour undertaken to give the band national exposure to more than 10,000 people a night - and back to headlining smaller venues where No Doubt is more comfortable.Still, at the Pond, No Doubt got a roaring initial reception and good response for the seven songs it had time to play. Stefani, a marvel of aerobic fitness who passes slow days on the road roller-blading around empty arenas, bounded and sauntered tirelessly. She played the hometown card, mimicking Judy Garland as Dorothy ("there's no place like home") and cajoling the crowd to sing along so she could impress her watching grandparents."It felt pretty good," Dumont said when it was over, en route to yet another round of meet-and-greet rock diplomacy. "It wasn't an A-plus, but a strong B."As the band members signed posters for fans in a stuffy room backstage, the Kanal, Stefani and Young families watched from the wings, knowing that, for the forseeable future, there will not be many chances to be in the same room with their rocking kin."They have a lot of hard work ahead of them, and success doesn't come without hard work," said Gulab Kanal, Tony's dad. Cousin Naveen Kanal nodded assent."If they wanted to have an easy life, they'd get real jobs."

While Rancid idolizes The Ramones and other classic punk bands like The Clash, Gwen Stefani -- who fronts the suddenly hot band No Doubt -- grew up in Anaheim, California, worshipping their "ska-rocking" British contemporaries, "Madness" and "The Specials." No Doubt has followed an uneven road to its current success -- from an unnoticed 1993 major label debut, to the 1995 indie album, "Beacon Street Collection," to its latest indie album, "Tragic Kingdom" -- which yielded the current hit, "Just A Girl."GWEN STEPHANI (vocals): There's just a lot of burdens being a girl, I think, and I just wanted to talk about that, I guess, and I think a lot of people can relate.MTV: No Doubt broke out on the airwaves this year, but the group has been together ever since they met 9 years ago, while they were playing in high school.ADRIAN YOUNG (drums): We consider ourselves very lucky.STEPHANI: We just, like, inhale each day and try to savor the energy and excitement in the air because it's just been so amazing. Goo Goo Dolls and No Doubt accompany Bush for incredible show
No Doubt, Goo Goo Dolls, Bush.
It sounds like a mini-Lollapalooza, but in fact it's the list of bands that performed to an energetic crowd Thursday at Rupp Arena.
The show opened up with No Doubt, and I'm just disappointed that I didn't hear of this band earlier.
The set was everything a music fan could ask for and more. Lead singer Gwen Stefani seemed to feed off the energy of the audience as she ran back and forth across the stage, while at the same time keeping the song flowing smoothly.
There was a fun sing-a-long to "Excuse Me Mr.," with Stefani exchanging lyrics back and forth with the crowd.
And when the band finally performed "Just A Girl," it was no-holds-barred electricity. Before the song started, however, she asked the audience if there were any girls out there, because the song she was about to perform was for ladies only. Man, I love it when bands talk to the audience.
After No Doubt's set was over, I had the urge to drop out of school and follow the band wherever it went.

What was the hold-up?

Nothing really . . . Only a lousy record company, the departure of their main songwriter and the end of a love affair between the group's longest lasting members.It's a crisp, clear afternoon in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, but the three members of No Doubt present are having a hard time facing the daylight. Esconed in the dim safety of their massive tour bus, one by one they roll out of their bunks, rub the sleep from their eyes and make their way towards the front.Singer Gwen Stefani is the first to appear, slipping on a fabulous shag coat over her tank top, she plops down in the driver's seat and waits for the guys to awaken. Guitarist Tom Dumont's mohawked head is the next to peek out, he wanders into the bus' lounge area, makes a circle around himself and offers no one in particular a beer from the cooler. The, the group's bass player, Tony Kanal steps out, looking slightly dazed, but not entirely out of it. Absent is the group's drummer Adrian Young, who is apparently off pursuing a female interest. The group's internal clock, it seems, has been disrupted since the release of No Doubt's second proper album Tragic Kingdom."It's pretty intense," Kanal says of the group's newfound daily routine. "Our schedule gets really messed up because we go across time zones. We usually go to sleep really late, like 4 or 5 in the morning. Then we wake up anywhere between 1 and 4 in the afternoon. But today, we had a radio interview so we had to wake up at 6 a.m.," he pauses, resisting a yawn. "But we love it. We're not complaining at all."Kanal's anxious tenacity has presumably been nurtured by No Doubt's recent ascent to alternative stardom in the wake of Tragic Kingdom's debut single "Just A Girl," which the night before made its MTV debut on "120 Minutes." Before we make our way out onto the streets of San Francisco, Stefani slips in a tape of the video and the tour bus' television monitor speakers come alive with the song's frantic riffing and spiky melody. Meanwhile, Kanal pulls out a copy of a recent issue of BAM from one of the overhead compartments and points to the cover which the band majestically graces. These are encouraging signs that success is finally catching up with Orange County's most charming purveyors of the ska-punk groove.Things weren't always so rosy for No Doubt. Three difficult years have passed since the release of the group's self-titled debut on Interscope. Shortly after the album's delivery, the record label mysteriously pulled its support for the project, leaving the band to finance a tour on its own. Undaunted, the group spent the first part of '93 working on new music, turning out roughly 50 fresh songs. They found a producer to work with, approached the record company with all their ideas and were indefinitely put on hold."The label said they're going to think about it," Kanal recalls, as we settle into a crowded restaurant in Chinatown. "And over the next two years all we got to do was a record in spurts, one song here, a couple songs there. There was time in between everything. It wasn't like we got to go in and do whatever. It was really frustrating, and it was due to lack of focus from, because the label was expanding. The people that signed us there moved on to other projects, so there wasn't focus on our project. We were screaming for it, and it wasn't happening. But we stuck it through, some of us went back to school, some of us got jobs. During that time, we toured ourselves, we did whatever we could to keep the name alive."Fate finally caught up with the band late last year when they got down to mixing the new record. The person the record company had elected to mix Tragic Kingdom also happened to be the co-owner of the Interscope-distributed independent Trauma Records, which made it's impact with Bush's debut album. Seeing the bum predicament No Doubt was caught in, he arranged to have the band switch over to his labels for the new album's release, confident he could give them the attention they deserved."To make a long story short, we switched over to Trauma and it's really great for us," Kanal says. "Because now we have the focus and the attention of a small, indie label, and we have the distribution and money of Interscope. We have the best of both worlds."While all the record company business was going down, No Doubt's primary songwriter and keyboard player Eric Stefani decided to leave the band. His exit hit a nerve, especially with his sister."We were supposed to leave on tour, and the night before he was like, 'Guys, I can't do it," Stefani recalls. "He was going through a lot of personal problems. It was horrible to see someone so full of energy and creativity be so low. He was so down on himself when anyone would have traded places with him because he is so talented.""There was a point where we knew Eric was leaving and we had to ask the question, what are we going to do?," Tom says. "We had put six or seven years of our life into this thing, and we just didn't want to give up. I think Eric would've been really bummed if we stopped. I think he felt like he had to get out of the way if he wanted us to move up. It was like he was a big tree in the forest, and we were all the little bushes in the shade. We weren’t getting any sunlight. So by him stepping out of the way, we got a little light and we were able to grow ourselves.""I think it was hardest on me, because he's my brother and was all of my inspiration," Stefani says. "I would never have been into a band called Madness if it wasn't for him. He was my main influence. When I got into the band, I learned everything from my brother."Yet, as evidenced on Tragic Kingdom, the remaining band members adjusted wonderfully. No Doubt's music sounds like a melange of juicy, striking new wave charm and punk rock chaoticism. There are bits of everything in the mix, yet the songs are still tight, effervescent bursts of pure pop irrelevancy."The last year of songwriting brought us together," Kanal says. "Eric left, but we felt really strong about keeping this going. We had patience. And somehow we persevered.""At first I was feeling kind of guilty, because I'm in the band still, and he wasn't," Stefani says. "But now it's feeling normal again. He's feeling really happy about it. Everyone thinks that now that everything's happening Eric's feeling regret. But he's not, he's so stoked.""The bottom line was that we weren't able to put out music for three years," she adds. "It really made it hard for us. We were at the point where we didn't want to write songs anymore. We lost a member. We went through a lot of problems. We're over it now. Now our situation has changed, and we're enjoying every day."Which brings us to Tragic Kingdom, a crushingly stark album. The product of Stefani and Kanal's failed love affair, its most forlorn songs "Happy Now?", "Don't Speak" and "End It On This" belie their cheerful exterior with the somber air of desperation."Let's face it, my whole life fell apart last year," Stefani says. "My brother left the band and Tony broke up with me; the two most important things in my life. But at the same time, you get the good with the bad. Tragic Kingdom, the album, every song is about Tony basically. There's some really cool songs that came out of the break-up.""Our whole relationship had become, to me, convoluted and intertwined with the band," Kanal says. "There was just no space, everything was tied together. I wasn't happy, and I don't think she was happy. I don't think I was treating her like she deserves to be treated. It's like when you're in a relationship, everyone says you shouldn't go out with someone you work with. That's totally true. It doesn't work out."There's only one problem."I still love him so much," Stefani says. "I'm in the worst situation."Given the circumstances, the title Tragic Kingdom takes on symbolic weight."It can apply to the album, it can apply to out lives, it can apply to Orange County," Kanal says. "That name just makes so much sense for where we were at. We went through so many hard years.""I think what had gotten us through this whole thing is the focus on the band," Stefani says. "The last year we really had to struggle to get the album out. To me, the whole thing with the relationship had gotten so old, we've been through this so many times that the most exciting thing in my life is the band. Things are going so good, that's all that we care about right now. Of course, once in awhile, I'm really lonely and I want to crawl into his bunk and grab him but, whatever, that's not important right now. Our little baby is here, Tragic Kingdom is here, let's work on that. That's where we are right now."And where No Doubt is at right now is an enviable position for any band coming off the release of its second album. "Just A Girl" is still making inroads on alternative radio stations all over the country, the group has a hectic touring schedule ahead and MTV's warming up to the song could hold unknown benefits. Still, the group remains hesitant to embrace its sudden success."We've been doing it for so long that we can't stagnate or be unrealistic about it," Kanal says. "It's not like we just started, that's why we can appreciate it. We don’t take it for granted.""I think I'd be lying if I said I didn't get excited the first time I heard our song on the radio," Dumont says. "What we're really about, though, is playing live shows and it's what we've always been about. Having a song on the radio just makes it easier for us to keep doing that. It makes it easier for us to get a lot of people at the shows, and when they get there we do our best to make sure they have a great time. Radio is like smoke and mirrors, it's like fool's gold. What is real is playing shows. You can grasp onto it and know that there's something there.""It's also like, we're on the radio, but that's today," Stefani says. "It could be gone two days from now. The best part for me is playing live and seeing people in the front singing the new songs. It's so awesome, I can't even explain it. The fact that you know these people had to listen to this album a few times to know the words, it just makes you feel so good. The live show is our thing.""A lot of people say, 'Now that ska's on the radio, we think it's our time,'" Kanal adds. "We don't see that. We don't see ourselves as a ska band. We see ourselves as a rock band that plays ska and punk and reggae. We mix everything up, that's always been our style. We've always been confused about what we are. We don't see ourselves as riding any kind of ska wave, it's just a matter of timing."As the waiter brings the check to the table, everybody gets up and heads out the door, ready to get back on the bus and proceed into uncharted regions of success. "It's the weirdest thing," Stefani smiles. "Suddenly everyone's into our loser band. It's awesome."

ANAHEIM'S NO DOUBT SETS THE "ROCK FEMINIST" LABEL ON ITS HEAD
By Wendy Hermanson, BAM Magazine - November 17, 1995 (transcribed by Craig Smith) Being a woman in today's pop music arena seems to immediately slap that feminist scarlet letter on the artist's chest - a tag that most of the prominent females in modern rock heartily endorse with their attitudes. A gauge of this? What would be the assumptive grrrl reaction to being called "cute"? Madonna or Courtney Love would probably have some smartass retort. Chrissie Hynde would just smirk or totally ignore the comment. L7 would laugh. TLC or Salt-N-Pepa would give it right back, only spicier. And the members of Bikini Kill might hit you over the head with their guitar.But Gwen Stefani of No Doubt would probably just say... "Thank you."Platinum hair and funky wardrobe aside, the one outstanding characteristic of No Doubt's frontwoman is polite propriety. "I'm old-fashioned", she admits, with an unapologetic smile. But don't be fooled. It's this very sense of quite-but-firm opinion that gives a twist to Stefani's particular brand of feminism - that is, one does not necessarily have to choose between cowering in silence or screaming to be heard. One can be humorous and articulate, as well as independent and forthright.No Doubt's newest record, Tragic Kingdom - the third release from this Anaheim ska / rock / pop hybrid who've been building a local following for eight years - marks the debut of Stefani as a primary lyricist, a role that previously had been, for the most part, shouldered by her brother (and band founder) Eric. Her sibling's departure from the band prior to the latest release (due to a desire to pursue a career in cartooning and animation) may be accountable for the decidedly feminine lyrical slant on Tragic Kingdom; Stefani's mix of unabashedly romantic topics, after all, is peppered her and there with uncannily simple-yet-effective sarcasm that could only come from the mind of one who's been there. Ask anyone without a Y-chromosome: The first single off the record, "Just A Girl", speaks clearly about the exasperation involved in female stereotypes. "Don't you think I know / Exactly where I stand? / This world is forcing me / To hold your hand.""I wrote that because my dad got mad at me for going to Tony [Kanal, No Doubt bassist]'s house and driving home late at night," the 26-year old singer explains. "I mean, c'mon, I'm, like, going on 30 here!" she exaggerates, laughing. "I wouldn't trade [being female], but I really don't think guys understand what a burden it can be sometimes."But regardless of whatever heavy message is ingrained in the lyrical side of things, Stefani's breathless vocals always manage to soar high and joyful over an upbeat, infectious musical cocktail, drawing diversely in turn from a horn section, steel drums, ‘80s-style keyboards, and a classic rock guitar. This is updated New Wave - and a sound that should be well appreciated by any former preteen who ever worshipped Debbie Harry and the Go-Go's.It seems odd to this band, then, that despite their hybrid sound, they seem to consistently carry an indelible label as a "ska band." "Our roots are definitely in ska," says Stefani. "When we started in 1987, we were just pretty much trying to imitate what we loved, and I was really into the [British] band Madness. I was the only ska girl at my school - as far as dress went, anyway. I would look at the English Beat girl - you know, the cartoon girl on their album covers - and think, ‘Maybe I'll get an outfit like that!' And our first big show was opening for the Untouchables that same year. But then we started finding different [musical] influences from different members.Not the least diverse of which was the influence of guitarist Tom Dumont, who tells his story with a sense of mild irony. "Before I joined in 1988, I was in a heavy metal band - yes, I can play [Metallica's] ‘One' on guitar," he grins. "We all used to rehearse in the same little studio in Anaheim. But I was becoming dissatisfied with my own band and the whole direction of the metal scene in general. I always liked other styles of music, and I would look in sometimes and watch [No Doubt] practice - it was fascinating, because this was different from any kind of music I'd heard before. Ska music... I was pretty unfamiliar with it. Anyway, I quit my band, independently of that, and within a week, I saw a flyer, ‘No Doubt needs a guitar player.' I was fortunate that they would accept a heavy metal guy with long hair and lack of fashion sense," quips the mohawked, AirWalk-wearing axe man. "Their scene seemed so much healthier to me. People would come to shows, dance, and just have fun."And drummer Adrian Young - although admitting to his own junior high-era ska fever - claims his earliest influences were his "hippie parents'" Hendrix and Janis Joplin records. Tony Kanal, meanwhile, was such a rabid Prince fan that "he wore purple to school," giggles Stefani. "So, as we began collaborating and getting experienced with songwriting," she continues, "we got this ambition - to not be a ‘ska' band. Because it was always this label that was put on us, and it was always our goal to have our own sound."Nevertheless, with ska currently segueing head-first into punk as the next "big thing" in popular music, the band have to acknowledge that the slightest reference to the upbeat )or offbeat) is going to throw them into the ska label. And cultivating - instead of fighting - the tag might prove lucrative in short order. Witness Rancid, whose return to skankin' roots on their latest album has gleaned them both major airplay and popularity with the ska-tinged single "Time Bomb".Stefani reflects on this suggestion. "Well, [the members of] Rancid started out in a ska band, Operation Ivy, so it's really not unusual that they would go back to that. But for me, personally, after being in the scene for eight years, I got burned out on all the up-and-coming ska bands over the years, I just got sick of them trying to repeat the whole 2-Tone movement.""The funny thing is that ‘Just A Girl' is not even close to ska," interjects Dumont "It's more of a New Wave thing. I don't know if people are throwing us in with the Rancids... I mean, there's nothing wrong with Rancid, but our song is actually more like Weezer." The rest of the bandmembers nod enthusiastically in assent."I look at our band as kinda like the Police," Stefani muses. "They had the reggae / ska thing happening, but they're a rock band. Our roots are ska, but ska just bubbles under in our music. We don't label our sound by that term."Whether they're technically ska or not, No Doubt's third record is currently the recipient of renewed commercial interest from its original parent label, Interscope (which released the debut No Doubt LP in 1992), even though they're still on the smaller indie label, Trauma Records. Confused? The story behind the label switch provokes sighs from the entire band. "It's confusing to everyone, including us," says Stefani, "but people are gonna want to know why this record took three years to come out." She cups her chin in her hand resignedly and begins the tale. "When we signed with Interscope in ‘91, they had just formed as a new label.""At the time, we were finishing up an indie CD that we were going to put out ourselves," continues Dumont. "[Interscope] decided they wanted to sign us, and they were going to give us some money. So, we thought, ‘OK, let's redo the CD in a really good studio.'""And we thought we were recording in a really good studio," Stefani's tone is flat. "But looking back, we were naive. It was almost like an independent release, anyway - there was no push for the record [by Interscope] and no kind of support at all. Everything we did on that record, we did ourselves. We did get tour support, though, so we toured the U.S. once.""Want a list of people who once opened for us?" asks Young, as he begins rattling off a semi- shocking roster: Rage Against The Machine, Ugly Kid Joe, Sublime, Dance Hall Crashers, 311..."When we got back, though, the problems started." Stefani has resumed the story. "We were writing and writing, but Interscope was being really wishy-washy about letting us go in the studio. Things just kept getting dragged out... .""Months and months and months," emphasizes Young, shaking his head. "We were going insane.""It was a really hard time. We were working, writing, attending school, trying to use up time," explains Stefani, who majored in art at Cal State Fullerton. "But every day, we were calling up and going, ‘When can we go in? When? When? When?'"Finally, in complete exasperation, the band built their own studio and self-released two 7-inch singles, while Interscope looked on with an idle eye. The months spent writing had flowered into a catalog of over 60 songs, most of which No Doubt realized would not land on their next Interscope release. So, in a spontaneous burst of energy, the band went into their homemade studio and bashed out a full-length second LP, The Beacon Street Collection, in one long weekend."Interscope was surprised," says Dumont. "They though we were doing another 7-inch. And then we ended up recording Tragic Kingdom in, like 10 different LA studios over the next two years - wherever they could get a deal on a studio!"It was during one of those sporadic studio session that Interscope introduced the band to a guy who was interested in mixing Tragic Kingdom. "It was this guy, Paul Palmer, who had just mixed this new band called Bush. You know what they sound like, right?" asks Dumont, dead serious. "Paul mixed ‘Just A Girl' first and then decided to mix the rest of the record a couple of months later. It turns out that he was the owner of Trauma Records, and he wanted to release the record on his own label - which was, conveniently, already tied into Interscope, thanks to Bush. After that, everything just turned around. Trauma got really hot because of Bush. Plus, they're a small label and totally focused. It was the best thing that could have happened to us!""You do have to remember, too," adds Stefani, determined to be fair, "that after we got on Interscope, the company became so huge. And we were pretty much dealing with just one person at that point. Now that we have to deal with Interscope all over again, we're remeeting people, and it's a whole new situation over there. It's all turned around and much better now."It's not just Interscope that's improved from the band's vantage point, either. They've also seen a good evolution in the attitude of the audience the band attracts as well. "When I first started singing, there weren't very many female singers in the scene," Stefani explains. "Whenever we went to a club, I would always be looked upon as a tagalong girlfriend - ‘Where's your wristband?!' But as soon as I finished a show, the same people would be, like, ‘Oooh - I can't believe you were up there!' And the attitudes of the girls in the beginning! More like, ‘Bitch! Who does she think she is?!'"Stefani, who seems unaware that her striking good looks might be considered intimidating, appears genuinely perturbed by this latter aspect. "But now it's gradually changed into this whole bonding thing between all the girls at the shows. They have their songs - they consider them their songs - that they can [mosh] to. It's weird being a girl who likes rock, because when you have a band, you're usually into the person, too. Like, when I liked Madness, I was totally in love with them. But it's different [for us] now, and it's great - the girls are into the music.""Except," deadpans Dumont, "when they look at my side of the stage, of course... ."The latter comment does make you wonder what it must be like for Stefani, one lone girl, touring with a busload of "crude" males. "Oh yeah," she says, cheerfully. "Burps, farts, everything! But I love touring, so I don't really pay attention. I'm pretty much used to it, anyway.""It's just not the three guys, either," adds Young, with a wicked delighted giggle. "There's our horn section - Steve, Gabe, and Phil. And Donnie the crew guy. Our ‘king of merchandise,' Merchmaster Matt..." Stefani rolls her eyes and smiles as her bandmates launch into a spirited explanation of bathroom technique and other etiquette while on the road.Not surprising, then, is the new No Doubt video for "Just A Girl," which is scheduled to shoot the day following our interview. The plot seems to be a humorous revenge of sorts for Stefani - she is to be shot separately from the others, singing in a plush and pretty ladies' room, while the boys are forced to perform in a "gross, pee-on-the-floor, club-type bathroom." It's a clever yet subtle plot that fits well with the duality of the song. "It's definitely a very real song, and there's always two sides to everything," says Stefani with a smile, admitting that the video story line was her idea.The naturally brings the subject back to our initial topic: Stefani's gentle-yet-solid form of feminism. It's easy to see that she clearly does not consider her role to be any kind of a selling point for specific political issues; thought-provoking lyrical matter is fine, but this band seems more into creating a friendly vibe. That is, dancing feet, not minds.Stefani puts her chin in her hand and thinks for a moment. "I should tell you this story," she finally says. "We were playing a Rock for Choice benefit. They were all excited about us and everything, ‘cause I'm a girl. Whatever. Anyway, my own feelings on abortion are pro-choice, but I personally don't feel right about it. I'm glad that no one can make that choice for me, though. So I said to the audience, ‘You know, if it were me, I would not choose to have an abortion, but I'm glad I have the choice.' After the show, everyone was so pissed off at me for saying that!" The bandmates shake their heads in chagrin. "Hey, it was a pro-choice benefit... there was nothing wrong with what I said."So, a belated welcome to the ‘90s where a musician like Gwen Stefani can define her own style of feminism, expanding and broadening the once-limited label of "Women in Rock." In other words, a style that is in charge, in effect, and definitely in demand. Will this appeal to male and female music fans beyond the Orange Curtain? The reply is obvious: No doubt about it!

Band quickly evolves into a solid five-piece unit, expanding their sound to include the styles of each member. With shows opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ziggy Marley and Mano Negra, their fan base broadens to the college crowd. Pizza mailing list parties become the modus operandi as the list, which was started in 1987, grows from a few hundred names to a couple thousand. Anaheim, California. Little Eric Stefani writes his first song, "Stick It In The Hole," about a pencil sharpener, forcing sister Gwen to sing along. Gwen was more interested in The Sound of Music.Born and raised in England, relocated to SoCal at age 11, Tony Kanal joins his high-school jazz band in 10th grade as the bass player, although he had previously played the saxophone.Ninth grader Adrian Young attempts to drum to "Bend Over' by O.C. band Doggy Style at a school talent contest; several years later, when he was 18, his parents bought him a kit for Christmas and he learned "Wild Flower" by the Cult.Tom Dumont's life changed when he realized what the phrases "dressed to kill' and "hotter than hell" really mean: Rock 'n' Roll; a wee lad with a prized KISS record living in Irvine (California), he dreamed of being a rock star. When he became a teenager, Tom picked up a guitar and started practicing.

After several raucous party performances, No Doubt play their first "official" gig at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach, California; the band was second on a bill of 14 with The Untouchables headlining. Tony, a high-school junior, was one of several hundred people watching. Shortly thereafter, he tries out. Band accepts him even though he's never been in a band, has long hair and is wearing Mexican sandals. By the summer, Tony, an organized perfectionist, becomes the band's unofficial manager.

Back-flipping singer John Spence forms Orange County-based 2 tone ska group No Doubt-named after his favorite expression-with keyboardist Eric, who forces Gwen to sing backing vocals. Gwen cites Madness, Kermit the Frog, Julie Andrews and Fishbone's Angelo Moore as her heroes.
